A brilliant piece of work! November 5, 2007 10 out of 14 found this review helpful
This is probably the funniest thing I've read since "America: The Book" from the writers of "The Daily Show." Just as "America: The Book" parodied civics textbooks and framed its jokes within that parody, "Our Dumb World" takes on the National Geographic-type student-oriented atlas and makes it all its own. A must-own!
The greatest book since 'America: (The Book)' November 2, 2007 13 out of 16 found this review helpful
This is easily the greatest thing I've read in a long time (probably the greatest thing since "America: The Book"). Two or three pages out of this book alone would be worth the FULL price tag let alone the discounted Amazon price. Christmas time is coming soon, and if you know people who like books (especially smartass ones with pictures; and I mean seriously, who doesn't) then this might be something you might buy in bulk for this holiday season. You also might want to send a change of underwear with each copy because it's literally that hilarious. No, seriously.
There are a lot of mistakes in this book! November 1, 2007 7 out of 21 found this review helpful
I don't understand how this could get published--I mean, a picture of people floating in an amusement park representing the Panama Canal? Saying that 10 million illegal immigrants enter America 'each night'? And, sorry to break it to you, but Madonna is not Eva Peron. I can't believe the state of the publishing industry--it's gone to H E double hockey sticks!
Well, if that didn't fool you witty characters in this world of constant sarcasm, perhaps a straight review will have to do. This book is freakin hilarious with a capital A. Where did Stephen Colbert get all his verbal ammunition? Try the Onion--the most seriously funny website ever. My favorite has to be the infusion of the classic Nintendo video game Contra all over Panama, but the Onion doesn't limit their jokes to impoverished Central American countries. If you want a crack at every US state, every nation, every culture and ethnicity, this is the book for you (if you prefer to just make fun of a smaller demographic--the Baby Boomers, you should check out my book: Why Baby Boomers Suck!: (No Offense Mom). If, on the other hand, you would rather cry over our dumbness or do something productive with your time, well, then don't buy this chuckle factory.
Huge Book November 1, 2007 23 out of 27 found this review helpful
When I first saw that that the Onion had done a spoof atlas book covering every country in the world, I thought it would be moderately funny. I mean, how are they going to make jokes about places most people know nothing about? Somehow, they manage to do it, and what results is a f-in hilarious, HUGE book. So much better than the Colbert book.
Hilarious October 31, 2007 Though I want to read this from cover-to-cover so that I don't miss anything, I find myself flipping forward to read entries about places I've lived in ("The people of America's Heartland are both friendly and considerate, whether giving directions to the nearst interstate or accepting fares at one of the region's many charming tollbooths"), visited (Italy: "Geometry teacher holding class in pizzeria again"), met people from ("Belgium: "Chocolate-covered chocolate"), or heard about on the news ("Iraq: Ethnic Breakdown: 75% Arab, 15% Kurdish, 4% Turkoman, 3% Tennessean, 2% Alabamian, 1% Kentuckian). There are tons of jokes in here--jokes about history, geography, culture, politics, literature, and the idea of atlases themselves. No matter their experiences, taste in humor, and level of offendability, readers will find plenty to make them laugh.
